Migrate Exclusive Interview: The End Of The Ocean

Recently we did an article on a post rock band that has become one of our newest (and personal) favorites “The End Of The Ocean.” We really dig their sound, and if you haven’t heard any of their music, well get acquainted.

We decided to get to know these fellow native Ohioans a little better. So our own Kevin Joos took it upon himself to find out what lies at “The End Of The Ocean.”

Members:

Kevin Shannon – Guitar

Joshua Qualls - Guitar

Tara Yost - Keys

Bryan Yost - Bass

Wes Jackson - Drums

MMN: What brought you all together in the first place?  Friendships?  Love of music?

The End Of The Ocean: ”We’ve all been friends in one way or another for the past few years. Some of us longer than others. The main focus is the music though. Our love for music and the opportunity to express that is why we’re all together in this band.”

MMN: Sometimes bands will decide to be instrumental because they couldn’t find a singer at the time.  Is that the case with you guys?  Or were you looking to explore the musical aspect to the fullest?

The End Of The Ocean:  “The End Of The Ocean started as a concept ambient project by Kevin and Bryan and it quickly developed into a full band. There were some things we wanted to do musically that forced us to look for more members. We’ve never intended on having vocals, we just wanted to create music that would allow the listener to go on their own journey.”

MMN: Where exactly does End Of The Ocean hail from? How is the music scene in the area treating you?

The End Of The Ocean: ”We are from Columbus, Ohio. The Post-Rock scene is a bit weird around here. There’s not really a huge scene (unless Explosions In The Sky or Russian Circles come through) but there are some great bands in the area that are really trying to develop a presence here. We’ve always had really good reception at our shows in the area.”

MMN: Have you all toured a lot? If so, where has the road taken you?

The End Of The Ocean: “We did a few tours last year. Mainly in the Midwest and East Coast. We’re trying to get out there more this year and we’re in the beginning stages of planning a west coast tour for this summer.”

MMN: Played in any big cities?

The End Of The Ocean: “We’ve played a decent amount of major cities. Some of our favorites have been Chicago, Washington DC, Detroit and Austin.”

MMN: Your music is very uplifting, I have heard it referred to as drawing an out of body experience.  With that said.  How does it feel to create this kind of music together as a band?

The End Of The Ocean: “It’s been amazing to hear the feedback that we’ve had. We’ve received emails from all over the world from people who tell us that they’ve made a huge emotional connection to our music. It’s really awesome to hear that because we put all we have into this band and we’ve created our music out of an emotional place. So to get back what we’ve put into it has been awesome.”

MMN: Have you guys been in other bands? Do you feel that those past genres and experiences have contributed to The End of the Ocean, or is this collaboration all very organic?

The End Of The Ocean: “All of us except for Tara have been in other bands. We dont necessarily think that our previous bands have been an influence on our music. It’s definitely helped us with other aspects of the band though. Our main influence on our music is all of the different types of music that we have listened to over the years. We have so many different styles of music that we like as a whole, so it’s given us a great chance to pull certain elements from those styles to make music that we love.”

MMN: How does it feel to break the mold for this genre of music?

The End Of The Ocean: “We don’t really feel like we’ve necessarily broken the mold. The beauty of this genre is that it’s has so many different faces with many different expressions. We like to think that we have our own sound but we definitely (and shamelessly) draw from the major aspects of post-rock.”

MMN: I notice an interesting theme accompanying your band.  What inspired your fascination with the sea?

The End Of The Ocean: “When Kevin and Bryan started the band we wanted a name that would represent different aspects of life. The ocean is such a vast, unknown organism and it really reminds us of the idea of life and it’s cycles. It’s just something we stuck with and became a concept for the band.”

MMN: How would you compare your new material These Shores Aren’t Out Of Reach to your first release Calm Seas Don’t Make Sailors? Do you feel like you have grown together as a group?

The End Of The Ocean: “This new album that we’re writing for definitely draws influences from Pacific·Atlantic but it definitely has it’s own feel to it. We’re still writing a few of the songs so it’s hard to say how different it will be from our previous work. We’ve definitely grown as a band and we’ve had some member changes and we feel that right now we are in a place where we are comfortable with our sound as much as we are comfortable to experiment with it as well.”

MMN: What is your main focus as a band for 2012?

The End Of The Ocean: “So far our main focus for 2012 is releasing our new album and touring. We’re hoping to get our name out there a bit more and see where that takes us.”
